History of Yahoo! Towers

Yahoo! Towers was a competitive multiplayer puzzle game on Yahoo! Games. Players arranged falling colored blocks, cleared matches, and used powers to put opponents under pressure while keeping their own stacks from reaching the top. Its six block symbols spelled Y-A-H-O-O-!, giving the game an unmistakable identity. A former player's retrospective recalls that mix of puzzle-solving and rivalry.

A community already playing in 2000

Surviving records place the Towers community in the early days of browser gaming. A Case's Ladder forum post dated September 11, 2000 identifies a ranked Yahoo Towers player and a ladder operator. It is a small but tangible trace of the people and organized competition surrounding the game by that time.

What made Towers distinctive?

Matching blocks was only part of the challenge. A preserved player-written power guide describes twelve attack and defense powers tied to the six colors, including adding or removing rows, disrupting an opponent's stack, and dealing with obstructive stones. Medusa and Midas pieces added their own surprises. Choosing when to attack, defend, or save a power gave players more to think about than simply finding the next match.
